Amphenol Advanced Sensors: ZTP IR Temperature Sensor Application Note
Amphenols thermopile infrared (IR) sensors are crucial components in modern non-contact temperature measurement technology. Their ability to accurately measure temperature without physical contact makes them indispensable in both consumer and industrial applications. Amphenol's portfolio includes both analog and digital variants.
Function
- A thermopile radiation sensor develops a voltage output in response to incoming radiation.
- The device is a series connection of many thermocouple junctions arranged so that incoming radiation heats a group of detecting junctions while not heating a group of reference junctions.
Sensor Components and Configuration
A typical thermopile IR sensor package includes:
- Thermopile: Senses object temperature.
- Thermistor: Compensates for ambient temperature variations.
- Bandpass Filter: Transmits/cuts specific IR wavelengths.
- Header and Cap: TO-39 or TO-46 packages.
Different filter materials (e.g., silicon, sapphire, CaF2) allow customization for various applications like human body detection, flame detection, and gas analysis.
Applications of Thermopile IR Sensors
- Medical Devices: Ear and forehead thermometers, dialysis equipment.
- Home Appliances: Microwave ovens, induction heaters.
- Automotive: HVAC controllers, occupancy detectors.
- Electric Vehicles: Inverters, charging stations.
Thermopile IR Detector Calibration
To ensure accurate temperature readings, thermopile IR sensors must be calibrated using a blackbody source and shield case (water bath).
