The Digi XBee® family comprises a comprehensive range of RF and cellular modules for wireless connectivity in IoT applications used in sectors such as industrial automation, smart energy, and medical technology. Supported Wireless Technologies

The XBee family covers a diverse range of wireless protocols tailored to different ranges, topologies, and application scenarios. Operating in the globally deployable 2.4 GHz band, it supports technologies such as Zigbee 3.0, IEEE 802.15.4, and DigiMesh®. These enable mesh networks for reliable, self-healing connections. Zigbee is particularly well-suited for interoperable systems in building automation and smart lighting, while 802.15.4 is used for point-to-multipoint communication. DigiMesh offers peer-to-peer networks without a central coordinator, ideal for remote monitoring.

Additionally, the family integrates Bluetooth Low Energy for local configuration and sensor connections. In the sub-1 GHz range, which offers longer ranges and better signal penetration, protocols such as LoRaWAN (via XBee LR), Wi-SUN, and DigiMesh variants are supported. Wi-SUN is now available and operates at frequencies such as 868 MHz (Europe), 900 MHz (USA), or 920 MHz (Japan), with features like Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) to prevent interference. Cellular options expand the range for global, location-independent connectivity.

Modules like Digi XBee 3 and the XR series allow for flexible configuration within a single device to switch between protocols. Ranges range from up to 3.2 km line-of-sight in the 2.4 GHz band (PRO variants) to 45 km in the sub-1 GHz range with high-gain antennas. For Wi-SUN modules like the XB-WSB-8S-081 model, the range is up to 7 km in open areas, with modulations such as OFDM and FSK for data rates from 50 to 2400 kbps.

This interchangeability reduces development time and costs, as pre-certified modules (FCC, CE, RCM) are ready for immediate use and support worldwide certifications.

The integrated software optimizes deployment: MicroPython enables edge computing without a separate microcontroller, with 1 MB of flash memory and 128 KB of RAM for demanding applications. Digi XBee Studio is a tool suite that offers graphical configuration, testing, and over-the-air firmware updates. The Digi XBee mobile app uses Bluetooth LE for local control, while Digi Remote Manager® enables cloud integration and remote management for thousands of devices. Security is covered by Digi TrustFence®, including 128/256-bit AES encryption, secure boot, and other threat controls. For Wi-SUN modules like the XB-WSB-8S-081, PKI, IPv6 security, and Silicon Labs Secure Vault are added.

These features make them suitable for harsh conditions (-40 °C to 85 °C) and low power consumption (e.g., 2 µA in sleep mode) in battery-powered systems.
